What to Wear to Highland Games

You'll be walking on grass, standing for caber tosses, and sitting on the ground or in camp chairs. Priorities:

• Comfortable walking shoes — fields are uneven and often muddy after rain
• Layers — Highland weather is a point of pride; even summer games can turn cool
• Sun protection — hat, sunglasses, sunscreen; shade is limited at most venues
• Rain gear — a packable jacket beats an umbrella (umbrellas block the view behind you)

There's no gatekeeping at Highland Games. You don't need Scottish ancestry, a clan connection, or permission to wear tartan. A tartan scarf, sash, tie, or kilt is warmly welcomed — and if you don't know "your" tartan, universal tartans like Black Watch, Royal Stewart, or Pride of Scotland are worn by everyone.

A few practical notes for first-time kilt wearers:

• Casual kilts (5-yard, or "sport" kilts) are fine for games — you don't need a full formal outfit.
• Pair with a plain t-shirt, polo, or ghillie shirt; boots or sturdy shoes work better than dress shoes on grass.
• Kilt hose and flashes are traditional but optional for spectators.
• Many games have vendor tents selling kilts on-site — a fun way to buy your first one with help sizing it.

Games are famously family-friendly. Dress kids in play clothes and closed-toe shoes — there are usually kids' athletics, craft tents, and plenty of room to run. A tartan accessory makes a great souvenir from the vendor row.

Competitors follow strict dress codes: heavy athletes compete in kilts, Highland dancers wear regulated outfits (kilt with velvet jacket for Highland dances, white "aboyne" dress for national dances), and pipe bands wear full band uniform. Part of the spectacle is seeing hundreds of competitors in full Highland dress — arrive early for the massed bands march, when every pipe band parades together.
